Fourth Annual Island Fishing Derby begins this Friday! Member Volunteers are required

The Annual Island Fishing Derby has been growing in popularity each year since it began four years ago.  Registration begins Friday, June 30, at noon until 8:00 p.m. and again on Saturday, July 1, from 8:00 a.m. to noon.  Please bring your completed pre- registration forms to register.  You will receive a copy of the rules and instructions about recording and submitting your catch statistics.  This derby offers the option of catch and release.  The derby begins at 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 1, and runs until noon on Sunday, July 9.  The Awards Dinner at the Conservation Centre will begin with awards at 4:00 p.m.  Mystery prizes will be awarded only to competitors who are present at the dinner.  Prizes for the largest fish caught will be awarded at the dinner, but if the winning contestant is absent, the prize will be sent to him/her.

Volunteers will be required to help prepare the serve the dinner on Sunday, July 9.  Please call John Paterson at 705-246-3352

Club Volunteers Needed: Kensington Conservancy and SJIHA Youth Day Camp:

The Youth Day camp is being offered at the conservation Grounds during the week of July 10-14

This event is definitely shaping up to be popular and beneficial to the campers, the Kensington Conservancy and the Club.  Already, registration for the event is nearly at capacity.

The camp, for children aged 9 to 14 will run each day from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  The teaching and supervision of the children is primarily the responsibility of the Kensington Conservancy, although John will be leading a how to fish workshop, and Wayne will be introducing the children to the trails.  Club volunteers are needed to help prepare and serve lunches each day between 10:00 a.m. and 2 p.m. and to supply baking.  At least one Club member must be on the Club grounds at all times during the day.

Kensington Conservancy and SJI Hunters and Anglers in Partnership

Excerpt from May 26 Press Release

The Kensington Conservancy and the St. Joseph Island Hunters and Anglers are excited to announce a new partnership project.  They have teamed up to present the first Explorers- Summer Day Camp.  This exciting project will run from July 10-14th, 2017 for children ages 8-14. Activities will include learn to paddle brought to you by Algoma Adventures, Nature 101 instructed by Sault College Professor Rob Routledge, Nottingham Archery, Photography, Birding, volunteers from the Hunter and Anglers will give guided tours through their amazing property trails.  So much to learn, see and do.

The St. Joseph Island Hunters and Anglers will host the camp at their beautiful facility on St. Joseph Island.  Snacks and lunches will be provided.  The day camp will run from 9:00 to 4:00 each day.

The Kensington Conservancy sees this as an extension of the Jr. Explorer program that offers fun activities for younger children ages 5-8 which has been running from their Desbarats location for 3 years. This program is an environmental education and outdoor appreciation program designed for children ages 5-8 and their families. The Junior Explorers start with a membership sign-up that provides each child with a T-shirt, notebook, activity binder.  This year the Jr. Explorer project will continue at a cost of $35.00 for the months of July and August.  Watch for an updated schedule on the Kensington Conservancy’s website.

The Kensington Conservancy is a registered charity with its office located in Johnson Township.  As a local land trust they are working to protect our precious lands and waters, in perpetuity, having protected almost 900 acres of ecologically sensitive lands in the area.  Many of their properties contain provincial significant wetlands.  They offer guided tours on many of their properties, as well as have the Foster Parkland and Walking Trails open to the public for hiking anytime.

Embracing good stewardship practices, they work with the local communities to develop programs that will promote greener and less intensive development, best land and water management practices, invasive species control, and low impact recreational activities, and good stewardship education.

Lake Huron-North Shore Elk Advisory Committee

Hello Members,

The SJI Hunters and Anglers Association has been closely involved with the Lake Huron-North Shore Elk Advisory Committee.  The Club has committed seed donations for food plots, and it has offered its volunteer help.  The Elk Advisory Committee is working to minimize the impact of elk, particularly on agricultural land, while also ensuring the viability of the herds.

2017, Twenty-Third Annual Wild Game Dinner, January 28th

Hunters and anglers, the harvest season has begun.  The Hunters and Anglers Club will gratefully accept any donations of meat for the coming Wild Game Dinner.

The 2017, Twenty-third, Annual Wild Game Dinner is being held at the Richards Landing, Royal Canadian Legion Hall.  The doors and bar will open at 5:00 p.m.  Dinner will be served at 6 p.m.  Silent auctions, live auctions and raffles will follow the dinner.

 

Ticket sales for the Wild Game Dinner will be Saturday, January 7, 2017, at the Conservation Centre beginning at 8:00 a.m.  There is a maximum of 8 tickets per purchaser, and tickets are sold on a first-come-first-serve basis.

NOTICE: Your membership is due in January

All members: your membership renewal is due in January.  The registration form is available on site.  Please print and mail or bring to a meeting with your payment.  Please note that your OFAH membership is included at a discount with your SJI Hunters and Anglers membership.  If the renewal date for your OFAH membership occurs later in the year, your renewal will recognise the difference and your OFAH membership will be extended one year from the date of its renewal.  For your and the Club’s convenience, renewal occurs for both, SJIHA and OFAH in January.

There are many benefits of membership.  Of those, insurance is a primary benefit.  Please note that if your membership expires, your insurance is not valid.
