During the deer rifle season on St. Joseph Island (WMU 45) Sault College Fish and Wildlife students operate a deer check station at the corner of Highway 548 and the Bridge Road. Successful hunters are encouraged to bring their deer into the check station where they will be weighed, sexed, and have their jaw bones removed for ageing. This valuable information is provided to Ministry of Natural Resources Biologists to help assess the health of the deer herd. Hunters are rewarded for their participation and with the knowledge that they are helping in the sustainable management of whitetail deer on St. Joseph Island.
